Lewis "Rawhide" Anderson

Lewis "Rawhide" Anderson, 68, of the River Falls Volunteer Fire Department, was directing traffic at an accident scene on U.S. Route 25 in Greenville County when he was struck by the tractor-trailer. He sustained massive head injuries and never regained consciousness.

The truck driver reportedly stopped after the collision to check for damage to his truck then continued on. Police found the truck at a dealership waiting to be repaired and arrested the driver. He was initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving. More charges are pending following Anderson's death.

Rawhide, a retired chemical company foreman who recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary, was a four-year veteran who missed only six of the department's 78 calls in 1998 and was named the Fireman of the Year.

Jordan B. Howard

Jordan B. Howard, a 30-year-old firefighter from River Falls, tragically passed away after he was involved in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 25 while riding his motorcycle to work. Howard was struck head-on by a truck that had led deputies on a high-speed chase in northern Greenville County.

The pursuit began earlier that morning after a report of a stolen truck. When a deputy arrived to investigate, the suspect in one of the trucks began driving toward the deputy, who was backed up against a concrete wall. The deputy responded by drawing his gun and firing several shots at the truck, with one bullet going through the windshield and injuring the suspect. The truck then struck the deputy and fled the scene.

Deputies pursued the suspect’s vehicle in a high-speed chase that lasted six to eight minutes before it was called off. Tragically, less than a mile later, the truck crossed into the southbound lanes of U.S. 25 while still traveling north, and collided head-on with Howard’s motorcycle.

Howard, a 2003 graduate of Travelers Rest High School, was a dedicated public servant and a lieutenant with the North Greenville Fire Department, where he had worked since 2007. His loss was deeply felt by his family, friends, and the community, as he was well-regarded for his commitment to helping others.
